McQueen was paired with Claire Young, who not only smiles all the time but talks so fast you half expect her to burst into a chorus of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
They quickly settled on calling their fragrance Roulette and conceived a retro marketing campaign with shades of Connery-era James Bond.
"Desire him, Chloe you want him to make love to you," said McQueen - with a little too much relish - as he directed the young woman pressing herself up against the penguin-suited hunk for the Roulette television spot.
"You want to take him to that next place."
Meanwhile, the next place for the other finalists, Alex Wotherspoon and Helene Speight, was the design company where their perfume bottle was to be crafted. Speight was elsewhere, busy not coming up with a name for their perfume, leaving Wotherspoon and returning failure Kevin Shaw to brief the designers.
"Potentially, is it possible to have a perfume where the exterior of it feels like a stress ball material?" asked Shaw.
"Kind of like the Rubik's Cube-type effect."

"If you've got a substantial-sized bottle, and it's sitting on the side at home, you don't really want to be carting that around all day," ventured one designer sensibly. "Could we come up with a way of splitting some of it into a smaller container that you can take out with you?"

Not surprisingly, in the boardroom, Sir Alan wanted to know whose cunning idea the bottle-within-a-bottle had been.
"That seems to be a bit of a grey area," said Wotherspoon.
"Kevin came up with the initial idea of the stress ball, and then we were just discussing it and it evolved into the product that it is now. It was a brainstorming session with the designer."
Which was a long-winded, not particularly honest way of saying: "It was the designer's idea."
Sir Alan didn't press Wotherspoon further - perhaps because he'd already decided to fire him and Speight, which left McQueen and Young for the final reckoning. There was much discussion about tenacity and personal journeys.
No mention from business paragon Sir Alan of McQueen's dodgy CV. McQueen was duly hired; Wotherspoon and Young duly burst into tears.
It was cheesy, unconvincing, staged - and entirely unswitchoffable.
